American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) held their 2024 Arctic & Antarctic Operations Symposium in March at Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum Heights, MD. THOR’s Vice President (VP) of Engineering Services Korey Gross, Senior Naval Architect Nikolina Kempker, and Naval Architect Mariah Vinson were in attendance. The symposium consisted of two days of technical presentations and discussion panels on national security topics including Early-Stage Design Analysis Tools for Coast Guard Icebreakers, Navigating the Complexities of Design for Polar Operations, and Engineering Challenges in the Arctic/Antarctic. This event also supported keynote speakers such as Admiral Daryl Caudle, Commander United States Fleet Forces Command (USFFC); Dr. Kelly Kryc, Assistant Secretary of Commerce (International Fisheries); and Rear Admiral Chad Jacoby, US Coast Guard’s Assistant Commandant for Acquisition and Chief Acquisition Officer (CAO). During the event, some of the dynamic missions discussed within the Arctic and Antarctic regions are naval operations, commercial operations, science and infrastructure in the polar regions. This includes icebreakers, research, relief and supply. These critical assignments require complex designs for polar operations to be successful and fulfill their objective. Consequently, as factors such as economic developments and geopolitical demands increase, so does the drive for improving how the world operates within these regions.
