THOR provides the Military Sealift Command (MSC) with engineering and technical support services. For example, THOR has provided MSC’s Engineering Directorate (N7) with in-service engineering support for MSC ships, supported naval architecture, marine engineering, and electrical engineering requirements, and advised MSC on ship material readiness. For example, THOR provided engineering and technical support to assist MSC Headquarters support activities in the USNS ZEUS (T-ARC 7) Machinery Control System (MCS) upgrade.

THOR measured propulsion bus power quality under a variety of load conditions and identified adverse power quality characteristics. THOR developed the test plan and requirements for the measurement and engineering analysis of electrical power quality to identify and quantify power line disturbances on shipboard propulsion under a variety of load conditions during a pier-side test, an at-sea test and during an extended ship mission. THOR’s test plan included detailed requirements for the electrical current and voltage measurements points, installation locations of current transformers and electrical bus connections, electrical power data measurements, lists of power measurement equipment including manufacturer and technical specifications, periodicity of data sampling, and data set size, as well as applicable electrical installation and safety standards. THOR detailed the methods of data collection and post-test data analysis and review, as well as restoration of the ship systems and equipment following removal of equipment at the completion of testing. THOR identified various test conditions and baseline electrical data with no load, electrical power quality data under the various loads, and power quality analysis with problem identification and identification of sources of disturbances.

Support was primarily executed in Washington, DC, Norfolk, VA, and at Detyens Shipyard in Charleston, SC.
